Leprosy
Leprosy is an infection caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium leprae, which affects mainly the skin, mucosa, and nervous system. It leads to discoloration, ulcers, and sensory loss in the affected area. Leprosy is an ancient disease and while it is now rare in most parts of the world, it still affects many people in developing nations. Without treatment, the physical deformities and disfigurement can lead to social ostracism and disability. Early diagnosis and treatment with antibiotics can cure leprosy and prevent its disabling effects. It is important to have treatments available so that leprosy can be eliminated in the future.
