Colonic Diverticular Disease
Colonic diverticular disease is a condition that occurs when small pouches form in the wall of the large intestine. These pouches, called diverticular, can become inflamed, leading to a range of uncomfortable symptoms such as abdominal pain and changes in bowel habits. Left untreated, diverticulitis can cause bleeding, infection, or even blockage of the large intestine. Treatment usually involves dietary changes, antibiotics, and sometimes even surgery. The key to preventing the disease is to maintain a healthy diet, with enough fiber and hydration. High fiber foods such as legumes, nuts, seeds, and whole grains can help keep the digestive system functioning properly and reduce the risk of colonic diverticular disease.
