Ankylosing Spondylitis

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is an autoimmune disease in which progressive joint inflammation causes fusion of bones in the vertebrae of the spine and in other sites, such as the shoulders, hips and feet. It is one of the most common forms of chronic inflammatory arthritis, affecting up to 1-2 percent of adults worldwide. The signs and symptoms of AS vary, but can include pain, stiffness and decreased range of motion of the spine, and in more severe cases, deformity of the spine and other parts of the body. Treatment can include medications, physical therapy and lifestyle modifications to reduce symptoms and improve quality of life.
