Anaplasma
phagocytophilum Anaplasma phagocytophilum is a bacterial pathogen that causes the disease human granulocytic anaplasmosis. It is a small Gram-negative bacterium that infects granulocytes (a type of white blood cell) and is usually spread through tick bites. Symptoms include fever, headache, malaise, muscle pain, chills and other general flu-like symptoms. In severe cases, the disease can cause encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) or severe pneumonia. Diagnosis and treatment often involve the use of antibiotics. Anaplasma phagocytophilum is a significant human health concern, as it is responsible for a growing number of illnesses. It is also an important research subject, as studying it can lead to a better understanding of bacterial pathogens in general. Further research may also lead to improved methods for diagnosing, treating and preventing infection by this bacteria.
