Shigellosis
Shigellosis is a highly contagious, diarrheal disease caused by Shigella bacteria. Symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and cramping, fever and blood in the stool. Treatment may include antibiotics, rehydration therapy and other supportive care. Shigellosis is a serious public health concern, particularly in regions where access to safe water and proper sanitation is limited. People of all ages, including young children, can be infected, making prevention through improved sanitation and hygiene measures essential. Improved sanitation and hygiene practices, such as proper handwashing and food safety, can help reduce the spread of the disease. Vaccines are currently under development, but are not yet available.
