Pepsins
Pepsins are endopeptidases, a type of protein-degrading enzyme, that play an important role in digestion. They catalyze the breakdown of proteins into smaller peptides and amino acids, using the acidity of the stomach as an activating agent. By breaking down proteins, pepsins enable the further digestion of these proteins by other enzymes in the gastrointestinal tract. Pepsins are found in the gastric juice of the stomach and are synthesized by cells lining the stomach. As these enzymes play a major role in breaking down proteins during digestion, their production needs to be closely regulated to ensure efficient digestion and prevent digestive disorders.
