Norovirus

Norovirus is a group of viruses that cause an illness known as gastroenteritis, which is characterized by nausea, vomiting, watery diarrhea, stomach cramping, and occasionally fever. Norovirus is highly contagious and affects approximately 19-21 million people each year, resulting in approximately 570-800 deaths in the United States alone. Norovirus is the most common cause of acute gastroenteritis and is one of the leading causes of food-borne illness worldwide. It is transmitted primarily through contaminated food and water, but can also be spread through direct contact with infected people or surfaces. Treatment focuses on managing symptoms and involves hydration, rest, and symptomatic relief. Prevention is key to avoiding norovirus and includes proper food preparation, frequent hand washing, and sanitation of surfaces.
