Gastroenterology and Hepatology Colon and Rectum is a specialized field of medicine that focuses on the health of the digestive system and related organs. These organs include the stomach, intestines, liver, and gallbladder. A gastroenterologist and hepatologist specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases related to the digestive system. Common conditions managed by a gastroenterologist and hepatologist include intestinal diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel syndrome, malabsorption disorders, and diverticular disease. Other conditions that may be managed include liver diseases such as fatty liver, hepatitis, and cirrhosis, gallbladder and pancreatic diseases, digestive cancers such as colon and rectal cancer, and diseases of the esophagus and anus. By receiving proper diagnosis, evaluation, and medical management, many digestive problems can be managed and prevented.
