Matrix-assisted Laser Desorption Ionization Mass Spectrometry
Matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS) is an analytical technique used in identification and quantification of molecules in sample materials. It combines ionization with mass spectrometry to detect molecules in the form of ions in a rapid and a highly sensitive manner. The process is initiated when a laser beam is directed towards the sample surface. Once the molecules are ionized, they are detected and analyzed by a mass spectrometer that reveals the mass-to-charge ratio of the molecules. This method is used for a wide range of applications including proteomics, metabolomics, synthesis characterization, and diagnostics. MALDI-MS has become an essential analytical method for many research areas due to its high sensitivity and speed in analyzing sample materials.
