Lipidomics

Lipidomics is a field of biochemistry that studies the role of lipids in cellular processes. Lipids are molecules that have hydrophobic (water-hating) and hydrophilic (water-loving) parts, and are essential components of cell membranes. Lipidomics is used to understand the role of these molecules in health and disease, by studying their abundance, structure, and interactions. By understanding how lipids interact with cells, we can develop treatments to prevent and manage diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. Lipidomics is an integral part of the field of “omics” sciences, which study the roles of various molecules and their interactions in order to understand how organisms function.
