Biological Molecules
Biological molecules are the organic molecules found in living organisms. They are essential components of life enabling organisms to carry out activities such as respiration, growth and reproduction. They have a wide range of functions including providing structural support, acting as transport and storage molecules and participating in metabolic pathways. The four major classes of biological molecules are carbohydrates, lipids, proteins and nucleic acids. The importance of these molecules lies in their ability to form complex structures, interact with each other and respond to their environment. These molecules are essential for the survival of all organisms and are used in a variety of applications in medicine and biotechnology.
