Varicose Veins
Varicose veins are enlarged, twisted, swollen veins that can appear in the legs. They are caused by weakened or damaged valves which allow blood to flow backwards and pool in the veins, making them look swollen, twisted, and discoloured. Varicose veins can cause discomfort, pain, and aching. Symptoms range from mild, such as aching or heaviness in the legs, to more severe, such as swelling, skin discolouration, and ulcers. Treatment for varicose veins can include lifestyle changes, such as exercise and avoiding standing for long periods of time, and medical treatments, such as sclerotherapy, endovenous laser therapy, or surgery. Early treatment is important to prevent more serious symptoms, such as leg ulcers, from developing.
