Shingles
Shingles is an infection caused by a virus called the varicella-zoster virus, which is the same virus that causes chickenpox. It is characterized by a rash, which appears as a stripe of blisters on one side of the body or face. Shingles can be painful and have long-term effects, such as chronic nerve pain. Treatment with antiviral medications and pain relief medications is important for reducing symptoms and preventing serious long-term complications. Vaccines are also important for preventing shingles in those who have had chickenpox in the past. Vaccination can reduce the risk of shingles, as well as the severity of symptoms if you do get it.
