Preservatives

Preservatives are compounds used to inhibit the growth of microorganisms, and extend the shelf life of foods and other products. They are used in a wide range of products, from foodstuffs such as jams and jellies to cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. Preservatives extend the time products can be safely stored and consumed, thus reducing waste and ensuring a safe and healthy food supply. These compounds can also prevent bacterial or fungal spoilage and reduce the risk of food-borne illness. In addition, preservatives can be used in non-food products, such as paints, to prevent bacterial and fungal growth, mildew and corrosion.
