Onchocerca

volvulus Onchocerca volvulus is a roundworm parasite that causes the neglected tropical disease, river blindness. It is primarily transmitted to humans through the bite of blackflies found near fast-flowing bodies of water. The disease affects millions of people worldwide, resulting in intense itching and skin lesions, and eventually irreversible blindness. When left untreated, this infection can also lead to severe disability and chronic illnesses. Fortunately, Onchocerca volvulus can be treated with medications, including ivermectin, or prevented through vector control and mass drug administration. As such, Onchocerca volvulus plays a critical role in public health, as it is a major cause of preventable blindness and disability.
