Melanocytes

Melanocytes are specialised skin cells that produce melanin, a pigment that gives skin, hair and eyes their colour. Melanin plays an important role in the protection of the skin from UV radiation and the development of skin cancer. It has also been found to have anti-inflammatory properties and can be used in topical treatments for skin conditions like psoriasis and vitiligo. The number and activity of melanocytes is also related to skin tone, with darker skin having higher numbers of melanocytes and increased melanin production than lighter skin. The increased protection from sun damage in darker skin can be beneficial, but also has some drawbacks such as a predisposition to hyperpigmentation. Therefore, understanding the regulation of melanocytes can help to develop treatments for skin conditions and increase skin health generally.
