Geriatric Dermatology

Geriatric Dermatology is the medical field dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of skin conditions and diseases that affect elderly patients. It is an important specialty given the increased prevalence of skin diseases in the elderly due to age-related changes to the immune system, as well as the fact that skin is the largest organ of the body and therefore covers a large area of potential risk. Common skin conditions in the elderly include age spots, psoriasis, eczema, and malignant melanoma. Treatment regimens and medical advice are tailored to the individual patient and are based on the type of skin disorder being treated. Geriatric Dermatology is an invaluable specialty as it ensures that elderly patients receive appropriate care, diagnosis and treatment for skin diseases, thus improving quality of life for those affected.
