Dermatomyositis

Dermatomyositis is a rare autoimmune disease that causes skin and muscle weakness. It is characterized by a skin rash around the eyes or on the face, chest, and upper arms, as well as muscle weakness in the shoulders, hips, and lower back. Generally, the disease is diagnosed based on clinical signs and symptoms, as well as blood tests, MRI, and EMG scans. Treatment usually includes medications to reduce inflammation, physical therapy, and support from family, friends, and counselors. Dermatomyositis can have a significant physical and psychological impact on people and is a cause for concern for those afflicted. With early diagnosis and proper treatment, the prognosis is typically good.
