Risk Factors
for Dementia Dementia is a progressive neurological disorder which affects memory, thinking, behaviour and the ability to perform everyday activities. Risk factors for developing dementia are age, family history, hypertension, diabetes, heart disease and stroke, smoking, depression, excessive alcohol consumption, head trauma, and decreased levels of education and physical activity. Knowing the risk factors for dementia allows for the development of preventive strategies, including lifestyle changes, regular cognitive stimulation, and early detection of disease through medical surveillance. This can reduce the burden of the disorder for individuals and their families, as well as control costs associated with health care.
