Postpartum Depression
Postpartum depression (PPD) is a type of depression that affects women after childbirth. It is caused by a combination of physical and emotional factors, including hormonal changes, sleep deprivation, and the stress of adjusting to a new role as a parent. Symptoms of postpartum depression can include sadness, anxiety, changes in appetite and sleep, low self-esteem, guilt, and difficulty forming attachments to the baby. Untreated PPD can have lasting effects on both mother and child, including an increased risk of maternal suicide and difficulty with parenting behaviors. It is important to get the help and support needed to successfully manage postpartum depression. This can include professional counseling, support groups, and lifestyle modifications like regulating diet and exercising regularly.
