Mathematical Anxiety
Mathematical Anxiety is an acute fear that arises when a person is preparing for, or is engaged in, any mathematics-related activity. It is characterised by feelings of tension, self-doubt and helplessness that interferes with the ability to solve mathematical problems. This adverse reaction can lead to avoidance of mathematics activities, thus hindering the development of valuable skills related to mathematics. Mathematical Anxiety is a significant issue among school and university students, which can result in a decrease in academic performance. To address this, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy has been used to reduce anxiety and to increase their confidence in their mathematics ability.
