Geriatric Depression
Geriatric depression is a type of clinical depression that occurs in older adults and is associated with a significant decline in quality of life. It is characterized by feelings of sadness and/or loss of interest in activities, decreased energy, and changes in appetite, sleep patterns, and social activities. It can have a serious impact on physical health, cognitive functioning, and overall wellbeing. Geriatric depression is treatable and the effectiveness of treatments such as cognitive behavior therapy, problem-solving therapy, interpersonal therapy, and antidepressant medications are well-established. Treatment can significantly improve the quality of life for those suffering from geriatric depression, as well as for their families, and can also help reduce the risk of developing other medical conditions, such as dementia.
