Co-morbidities of Depression
Depression is a serious mental health disorder characterized by persistent feelings of sadness, low energy, and problems with day-to-day functioning. In addition to the direct symptoms of depression, research has shown that individuals with depression are more likely to have other prevalent health conditions, known as co-morbidities. Common co-morbidities of depression include cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancer, obesity, and HIV infection. Research indicates that having multiple illnesses at once can worsen the impact of each condition and may lead to poorer treatment outcomes. Managing co-morbidities of depression is essential for improved mental and physical health outcomes. Treatment plans should include comprehensive care that addresses all conditions, such as lifestyle modifications, medications, psychotherapy, and self-care.
