Mouthguard
A mouthguard is a type of dental device used to protect the teeth from damage during sports activities or other physical activities that could result in injury to the mouth. Custom-fit mouthguards are made from a mold of the individual's teeth and provide the best protection as they fit snugly around the teeth for maximum coverage. Mouthguards not only protect the teeth, but also help to absorb shock that could lead to injury of the jaws, lips, and tongue. Other types of mouthguards include boil and bite mouthguards, which are softened by boiling and then molded to the teeth, and stock mouthguards, which are preformed and come in various sizes for a universal fit. While these types of mouthguards may be more affordable, they may not provide a proper and secure fit, which can result in discomfort and limited protection. It is recommended that individuals wear a mouthguard during any physical activity that could result in injury to the mouth, including contact sports such as football, basketball, and hockey. Mouthguards are also recommended for individuals who grind or clench their teeth, which can cause dental damage and jaw pain. Proper care and maintenance of a mouthguard is important to ensure its effectiveness and longevity. Mouthguards should be rinsed with cool water after each use and stored in a clean and dry container. Mouthguards should also be replaced if they become worn, damaged, or if the individual undergoes significant dental changes, such as orthodontic treatment.
