Impacted Canines
Impacted canines are a common dental problem where the canines, also known as the eye teeth or cuspids, fail to fully emerge from the gums and become properly aligned with the other teeth. This condition can cause discomfort, pain or even infection if left untreated. Impacted canines can occur due to a range of factors, such as overcrowding, abnormal tooth development, and genetic factors. Identifying an impacted canine early on is essential to avoid more extensive and costly dental treatments in the future. A dentist or orthodontist can diagnose impacted canines through a visual examination, x-rays, and other diagnostic tools. In severe cases, impacted canines may require surgery to create a pathway for the tooth to emerge properly. This procedure is known as an exposure and bonding. In this process, the surgeon will reveal the impacted tooth by making a small incision in the gums and attaching an orthodontic bracket to the tooth. This bracket will then be connected to other orthodontic wires and brackets to guide the tooth into its proper position. Overall, it is essential to maintain healthy oral hygiene and schedule regular dental appointments to prevent the development of impacted canines. While impacted canines can be challenging to deal with, early detection and prompt treatment can help avoid serious dental problems and ensure a healthy, attractive smile.
