Epiglottitis
Epiglottitis is an acute, potentially life-threatening condition caused by inflammation of the epiglottis, a small flap of cartilage that sits at the back of the throat and acts as a barrier between the trachea and the esophagus. It is characterized by airway obstruction, and can lead to difficulty breathing and swallowing, stridor (a harsh noise when breathing in), hoarseness, and fever. Treatment typically involves antibiotics and corticosteroids, and in some cases an airway procedure may be needed. Prompt recognition and treatment is essential to ensure recovery without complications. Epiglottitis is a rare condition, but it is important to be aware of it as it can lead to serious respiratory complications if left untreated.
