Drowning

Drowning occurs when a person is submerged in liquid or has their airway obstructed, leading to the inability to breathe. It is a major cause of death among children and adolescents worldwide, particularly in low-income countries. In addition, it can have fatal consequences such as brain injury and long-term disability. Prevention is key and includes techniques such as swimming lessons, improved access to life jackets, providing barriers between a water area and the general public, and responsible alcohol consumption. Drowning is a preventable tragedy and requires active attention and policies to reduce its impact.
