Death Time Estimation
Death time estimation is the challenging task of determining the approximate time of death based on the post-mortem examination of a body. It is a critical consideration in many legal and criminal investigations. The estimation of death time has three main components: the determination of the time of death, the cause of death and the manner of death. The information gathered during the post-mortem examination is used to make an inference about when death occurred so that investigators can piece together events prior to death. This information is also important for verifying alibis and for determining if and when a crime occurred. Death time estimation relies on many variables, including the state of the body, presence of rigor mortis, livor mortis, and algor mortis, signs of decomposition, and the environment in which the body is found. Accurate and reliable death time estimates are essential to understanding the events preceding death and help to resolve disputes in the court of law.
