Death Drive

The death drive is a psychoanalytic concept first introduced by Sigmund Freud in his 1920 essay Beyond the Pleasure Principle. It refers to a basic biological tendency to pursue self-destructive behaviour. The death drive is thought to be an innate, unconscious urge in human beings to return to an earlier state of mind, such as the inanimate state of a fetus. It has been interpreted to explain phenomena such as aggression, masochism, and other self-destructive behaviours. According to this concept, humans are motivated to repeat experiences and seek pleasure, but they are also driven to seek destruction and self-destruction. It is thought to be a counter-force to Eros, the natural instinct for life, and is central to understanding pathological behaviours. The death drive is a form of motivation that has been linked to numerous physical and mental health issues, including substance abuse, suicidal behaviour, and certain mental illnesses.
