Virology Persistence and Latency

Virology persistence and latency refers to the process whereby a virus, or a population of viruses, can remain in the body of a host without causing any symptoms of infection or disease. It is an important concept in virology as it can affect the course of an infection and influence the transmission of a virus between hosts. It is also an important factor when considering strategies for developing vaccines and antiviral drugs. Persistence and latency of a virus can also be seen as playing a part in the natural history of an infection. Understanding the mechanisms of persistence and latency of viruses is therefore essential for the successful control of virus infections.
