Viral Structure
Viruses are submicroscopic infectious agents that consist of genetic material surrounded by a protein coat. They are non-living, but use the machinery of the host cells in which they replicate to reproduce. Viruses are known to cause a range of diseases in humans, animals, and plants, and also have increased relevance in biotechnology. Viruses can play a role in gene transfer, which leads to the discovery of new treatments for human diseases, and have potential applications in the production of useful proteins and vaccines. In addition, they provide insights into the fundamental molecular biology of cells, allowing us to further understand cellular processes.
