Vaccinations

Vaccinations are a cornerstone of public health, providing protection from many infectious diseases. Vaccines are made using components of the pathogen that cause the infection, such as viruses or bacteria. When given to individuals, the vaccine stimulates their immune system to recognize the pathogen and mount an effective response to it, known as immunity. Vaccinations are a safe, effective and proven way to protect against diseases, reducing the rate of illness and death among individuals and communities. Vaccinations are also important in containing the spread of a disease by reducing the pool of susceptible people that can spread it further. As such, they are a key strategy to promote public health and protect lives.
