Tobamoviruses

Tobamoviruses are viruses belonging to the family of RNA viruses, the Tobamoviridae, which includes the genus Tobamovirus. They primarily infect members of the plant kingdom, and are responsible for causing significant economic losses in crop production worldwide. Many tobamoviruses, such as Tobacco Mosaic Virus, are widely studied and have been used to elucidate fundamental plant virology and molecular biology processes. For example, tobamoviruses are used as gene vectors in plant gene transformation techniques, and as tools to study the development and regulation of virus-induced symptoms. Tobamoviruses have also recently been used in agricultural biotechnology to create crops that are more resistant to pests and diseases.
