Rubella

Rubella, also known as German measles, is a highly contagious disease caused by a virus. It is characterised by a pink or red rash on the face and body, as well as a sore throat, fever, and swollen lymph nodes. Although it is usually a mild illness, if contracted during pregnancy, the virus can cause serious complications to the unborn baby, including vision, hearing and heart defects, intellectual disabilities and even miscarriage. As such, it is important to be immunised against rubella to protect both pregnant women and unborn babies. Vaccination is the safest and most effective way to prevent rubella infection, and is recommended for children and adults.
