Pyrogens
Pyrogens are substances that can cause fever in humans. These can be found in bacterial products such as toxins or endotoxins. Pyrogens can also be caused by viral and fungal infections. They are important for healthcare professionals to recognize as they can indicate the presence of an infection. Pyrogens can be used to detect and diagnose infections, since a rise in body temperature can be used as an indication of possible infection. They can also be used to produce vaccines and therapeutic agents. Additionally, pyrogens can be used in laboratory testing, such as for bacterial cultures.
