Oncogenic Viruses
Oncogenic viruses, also known as cancer-causing viruses, are a type of virus that can lead to the development of certain types of cancer. They are able to do this by damaging the cells of the body, resulting in mutations that could potentially initiate cancerous growths and tumors. Oncogenic viruses can be transmitted through contact with the infected individual, or from exposure from the environment. Examples of oncogenic viruses include Human Papillomavirus (HPV), Epstein-Barr virus, and Human T-cell Leukemia Virus. Vaccines for some of these viruses are available and can help reduce the risk of cancer-causing virus exposure. Understanding and identifying oncogenic viruses is important for helping to diagnose and treat cancer, as well as for preventing future cancer cases.
