Norovirus
Norovirus is a type of virus that is a leading cause of gastroenteritis, or the inflammation of the stomach and intestines. It is highly contagious and can be spread through direct contact with an infected person, contaminated food or water, surfaces that have been exposed to the virus, or contact with airborne particles. Symptoms of norovirus include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal cramping. If left untreated, severe dehydration can occur. Norovirus is responsible for the majority of foodborne illnesses that are reported in the United States and outbreaks can be prevented with proper handwashing and sanitation.
