Mimivirus

Mimivirus is a giant virus that was first discovered in 2003. It has a complex structure, including several genes, a substantial capsid shell, and a genome that is larger in size compared to other viruses. It was the first virus to be identified as a ‘giant virus’, having a larger genome and complex structure than most other viruses. Mimivirus is significant as it has since been used to help us better understand the concept of ‘giant viruses’, the origins of current viral diseases and their evolutionary relationship with host cells. It has also provided scientists with tools that can be used to better characterize and classify novel viruses. Additionally, Mimivirus has been used to develop new treatments and potential vaccines used to combat viral diseases.
