Hepadnaviruses

Hepadnaviruses are a group of viruses known for causing liver diseases in humans and other animals, such as ducks and woodchucks. The best-known member of the group is the hepatitis B virus (HBV). Other important members include those causing hepatitis D, hepatitis E, and even a type of liver cancer. By causing liver damage, these viruses can lead to serious medical complications, including cirrhosis and liver cancer. They are also highly contagious, as they can be transmitted through contact with infected body fluids. Vaccines are available to protect against some members of this virus family, such as HBV. As the global prevalence of hepadnaviruses continues to rise, they remain an important public health issue.
