Filariasis
Filariasis is a parasitic infection caused by a microscopic thread-like worm. It is spread through the bite of mosquitoes carrying the infective larvae, and is most common in tropical and subtropical regions. It affects millions of people around the world, particularly in Southeast Asia, Africa, and South and Central America. Symptoms vary depending on the severity of the infection and can include fever, swollen lymph nodes, skin lesions, pain and swelling in the arms and legs, and a blocked lymphatic system. Complications can include fluid buildup in the lungs, joint pain and swelling, and even elephantiasis of the extremities. Treatment is available with drugs such as diethylcarbamazine or ivermectin, and prevention through mosquito control methods.
