Coronaviruses

Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that can cause illnesses ranging from the common cold to more serious diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). The most recently discovered coronavirus is the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) causing the 2019-20 pandemic. Coronaviruses are significant due to their ability to cause serious and potentially life-threatening diseases and their transmission from animals to humans. Coronaviruses can be detected with a variety of methods including RT-PCR, serology and antigen detection tests. The development of innovative treatments and vaccines for coronaviruses is essential for reducing the spread and morbidity and mortality associated with diseases caused by these viruses.
