Common Cold
The common cold is a viral infection of the upper respiratory tract that is usually mild and self-limiting. Symptoms usually include nasal congestion and discharge, sore throat, and fever. The common cold is extremely prevalent and often affects people of all ages and populations. It is the most common cause of missed days from school and work. Although there is no cure for the common cold, treatments such as over-the-counter medications, rest, and increased hydration with fluids can help relieve symptoms and reduce the duration of the illness. Prevention strategies such as frequent hand-washing and avoiding contact with individuals who have cold symptoms may reduce the chance of exposure to the virus and likelihood of contracting the infection.
