Cholera
Cholera is an acute gastrointestinal infection caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. It is primarily spread through drinking or eating contaminated water or food. Symptoms include watery diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. Cholera can be deadly if left untreated and can lead to significant dehydration and death. Treatment includes oral rehydration solutions, antibiotics, and zinc supplements. Cholera is important to recognize and prevent because it can affect large numbers of people in a short time, can spread rapidly among groups of people, and can cause large numbers of deaths. It is important to take preventative measures such as drinking clean water and ensuring that food is cooked properly.
