Bilirubin
Bilirubin is an orange-yellow pigment found in bile, a fluid that aids in digestion. It is a by-product of red blood cell breakdown. High levels of bilirubin in the bloodstream can indicate liver or gallbladder disease or cause jaundice, a condition in which the skin and the white part of the eyes take on a yellowish hue. Doctors measure bilirubin levels to diagnose, monitor, and evaluate the effectiveness of treatment for various conditions. In addition to its medical uses, bilirubin has recently been studied for its potential antioxidant properties and is being researched in the treatment of certain cancers.
