Biliary Disease
Biliary disease is a broad term for conditions that affect the bile ducts, which are responsible for the production, storage, and secretion of bile, a vital substance made in the liver. Bile plays an important role in digestion by helping to break down lipids and transport toxins out of the body. Biliary disease can affect all ages, however, it is most common in adults, and often results in symptoms such as dark urine, pale stool, yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes (jaundice), abdominal pain or bloating, and loss of appetite. Treatment of biliary disease depends on the underlying cause and can range from lifestyle modifications to surgery. Early detection and prompt treatment is important to prevent long-term complications such as liver scarring and cirrhosis.
