Astrovirus

Astroviruses are small, spherical viruses that belong to the family Astroviridae. They are found in a variety of animals, including humans, and are responsible for a range of mild to severe illnesses. In animals, astrovirus infections can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and intestinal inflammation, while in humans it may cause gastroenteritis – a condition characterized by stomach pain, vomiting, diarrhea, and fever. Astrovirus infections can be especially dangerous among young children and elderly people, who are more likely to experience severe symptoms. Diagnosis of astrovirus infection is difficult, as symptoms can be confused with other illnesses, and treatment is mainly supportive. Vaccines are not currently available, but epidemiologic surveys, molecular diagnostic tests and other strategies are used to detect, monitor, and control astrovirus outbreaks.
