Antiviral Drugs
Antiviral drugs are substances used to target and alleviate the symptoms of viruses. By preventing the replication of viruses, antiviral drugs can weaken or even stop infections from taking hold. They are used to treat infections caused by viruses, including the common cold, influenza, hepatitis, herpes, HIV/AIDS, and shingles. Adverse side effects of antiviral drugs may include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, though serious side effects such as liver or kidney damage are typically rare. Additionally, some antiviral drugs are used to treat certain cancers, such as Epstein-Barr virus. With their ability to treat a wide range of virus-borne illnesses, antiviral drugs have become increasingly important in maintaining public health.
