Primary Biliary Cirrhosis

Primary Biliary Cirrhosis (PBC) is a type of liver disease in which the bile ducts within the liver become blocked and inflamed. This causes a decrease in bile production, which can lead to a build-up of toxins in the blood and a build-up of bile in the liver. PBC can lead to liver scarring, known as cirrhosis, and liver failure. Symptoms of PBC can include itching, fatigue, yellowing of the skin and eyes, and abdominal pain. Treatment for PBC typically focuses on controlling symptoms and managing complications. Medications can help slow disease progression and reduce the risk of damage to the liver. In severe cases, a liver transplant may be necessary. Early diagnosis and management are key for improving long-term outcomes for people with PBC.
