Bipolar Mood Disease
Bipolar mood disorder (BMD) is a mental illness characterized by extreme mood swings ranging from periods of extreme elation and energy (known as manic episodes) to periods of deep depression. People with BMD experience changes in sleep patterns, energy levels, and activity levels as well. BMD can have a significant effect on a person’s life, making it difficult to maintain relationships, hold down a job, and perform everyday tasks. It is estimated to affect over 3 million Americans, making it one of the most common mental illnesses. Treatment for BMD typically involves a combination of medications, psychotherapy, lifestyle changes, and self-management strategies such as stress management and avoiding triggers. With treatment, people with BMD can learn to better manage their symptoms and lead a full and productive life.
