Bejel
Bejel (aka endemic syphilis) is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the spirochete bacterium Treponema pallidum endemicum. It is a chronic, contagious disease that can cause physical and neurological damage if left untreated. Bejel is most commonly found among the indigenous populations of the Middle East and North Africa, East Africa, the Indian Subcontinent, Southeast Asia, and Mexico. It is characterized by skin sores, fever, and lymphadenopathy. If left untreated, it can cause damage to the nervous system, impair organ functioning, and, in some cases, be fatal. Bejel is treatable with antibiotics. However, due to the chronic nature of the infection, multiple courses of antibiotic treatment are often necessary. Practicing safe sex is the best way to prevent infection with Bejel.
